Venous Malformation

Our Venous Malformation Assessment Clinic provides structured evaluation, imaging guidance, and referral pathways to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate specialist management.

Venous malformation is a congenital vascular condition that can cause pain, swelling, skin changes, and functional impairment. Because presentation varies widely and overlaps with other venous disorders, patients are often misdiagnosed or treated late.

What is a venous malformation?

Venous malformations are low-flow vascular anomalies present from birth, although symptoms may not appear until later in life. They consist of abnormal, dilated venous channels that can expand over time.

Common features include:

  • soft compressible swelling
  • bluish skin discoloration
  • pain or heaviness
  • enlargement with standing or activity
  • thrombosis within the lesion
  • progressive limb asymmetry

Unlike typical varicose veins, venous malformations are structural developmental abnormalities rather than acquired reflux disease.

Conditions commonly confused with venous malformations

Patients are often referred after treatment pathways for other venous conditions have not explained their symptoms.

These may include:

  • atypical varicose veins
  • pelvic-origin reflux patterns
  • unexplained recurrence after vein procedures
  • localised chronic swelling without truncal reflux
  • soft tissue vascular lesions of uncertain origin

Who should attend this clinic?

You may benefit from assessment if you have:

  • a long-standing compressible blue or purple swelling
  • limb asymmetry present since childhood or adolescence
  • persistent unexplained localised pain
  • recurrent thrombophlebitis in the same area
  • swelling that increases with standing or exercise
  • previously labelled “atypical varicose veins”
  • suspected vascular birthmark associated with symptoms

These features may indicate an underlying venous malformation rather than primary venous reflux disease.

Our role as your diagnostic gateway

This clinic provides structured evaluation for patients with suspected venous malformations and directs them toward appropriate imaging and treatments and specialist care pathways.

During assessment, we:

  • review clinical history and onset pattern
  • examine lesion characteristics and distribution
  • assess for associated venous insufficiency
  • perform targeted duplex ultrasound where appropriate
  • determine whether MRI or further vascular imaging is required
  • arrange referral to interventional radiology or vascular anomaly specialists when indicated

This ensures patients receive accurate diagnosis before treatment decisions are made.
